Grand Opening at Newton’s Down Under Yoga
9 AM – 4 PM | Free 30 to 45 minute taster yoga classes with Down Under’s teachers
5:00 PM | Welcome and keynote speech by Patricia Walden, followed by yoga demonstration
5.30 PM | Panel Discussion – Balancing Acts: Poses, Products, and the Future of Yoga in America
at Down Under Yoga in Newton, MA

A lot has changed since Swami Vivikenadana introduced yoga to the U.S. at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Mainstream Americans were wary of what sounded like a mystical religion. Today, more than 16 million Americans practice yoga on a regular basis, most emphasizing the physical rather than the spiritual side. The amount of money spent on yoga outfits and accoutrements, yoga vacations and retreats, water bottles, underwear, and videos stretches well into the billions. We all celebrate this new popularity, but for the opening of Down Under Yoga, founder Justine Wiltshire and Director of the Iyengar Program Peentz Dubble have invited three of the country’s most prominent and accomplished yoga teachers to discuss the changes, the benefits and pitfalls of commercialization, and where it’s all heading. Featuring Barbara BenaghShiva Rea, andPatricia Walden.

Shiva Rhea master class too from 3 – 4:30 pm! (registration required. Proceeds will be used to buy a bike rack for Newtonville and environmentally greening their space around Walnut Street.)
For more information, visit the Down Under Yoga website.

9 AM     |   Vinyasa with John
at Samadhi Yoga Studio Newton Centre, MA

These special classes are dedicated to Phuni Meston and her children. As many of you know, Phuni suffered the devastating loss of her husband this year after his lifelong battle with depression. We would like you to join us in honoring the strength of this amazing family by coming to these fundraising classes on Thanksgiving Day.

Additionally, you may have noticed all of the beautiful new jewelry we have on display. All pieces are on loan from Phuni’s store, Karma, where you can find hundreds of beautiful, fair trade works of art, all carefully selected and sourced directly from the artisans.

All proceeds from this class will be donated to Phuni & her family.

If you are unable to attend but would like to contribute, donations will be accepted at the front desk in any amount now until December 2nd.
